How can business be sustainable in a capitalist society.
On 9th December 2012 I was invited to Chair a session on Sustainable Business at Jaipuria Institute of Management, Jaipur. I was thinking on the issue . I thought if we really wish to make this happen we will have to change the basic definition of scarcity definition. When we teach that resources are limited immediately there is a greed to grab the limited resources so that when there is shortage in the market we may enjoy the benefits of consuming them. this is the basis of environmental degradation and destruction. It is essential that we develop with nature. we develop without destruction.So we should start with the definition of Gandhian Thought that this earth has enough to satisfy the needs of all but could not satisfy the greed of any body. If we limit our wants and revert back toward self sufficient local economies producing at local level using appropriate technology the destruction can be minimized.
In a capitalist economy where profit motive is the target why a business will opt for policies which reduces profit. We may pass as many environmental law the situation will not improve.
